High Altitude Molecular Clouds

چکیده

A population of molecular clouds with a significantly greater scale height than that of Giant Molecular Clouds has been identified by examining maps of the latitude distribution of the CO(1 − 0) emission in the first quadrant of the Galaxy. These clouds are found by identifying emission more than 2.6 times the scale-height away from the galactic midplane (centroid of CO emission) at the tangent points. Since the distance to the tangent points is known, we know the height and the sizes of these clouds. They are smaller and fainter than the GMCs and do not seem to be gravitationally bound. These clouds have properties similar to the high latitude clouds in the solar neighborhood. Although they lie outside the molecular cloud layer, the high altitude clouds are well within the HI layer in the Galaxy and coincide with distinct peaks in the HI distribution. These clouds represent a galaxy wide population of small molecular clouds having a larger scale height. They may be clouds in transition between molecular and atomic phases. Tropical tropospheric ozone derived using Clear-Cloudy Pairs (CCP) of TOMS measurements

Using TOMS total-ozone measurements over high-altitude cloud locations and nearby paired clear locations, we describe the Clear-Cloudy Pairs (CCP) method for deriving tropical tropospheric ozone. The high-altitude clouds are identified by measured 380 nm reflectivities greater than 80% and Temperature Humidity InfraRed (THIR) measured cloud-top pressures less than 200 hPa. To account for locati...

Removal of meteoric iron on polar mesospheric clouds.

Polar mesospheric clouds are thin layers of nanometer-sized ice particles that occur at altitudes between 82 and 87 kilometers in the high-latitude summer mesosphere. These clouds overlap in altitude with the layer of iron (Fe) atoms that is produced by the ablation of meteoroids entering the atmosphere. Simultaneous observations of the Fe layer and the clouds, made by lidar during midsummer at...

Stratiform cloud electrification: comparison of theory with multiple in-cloud measurements

Stratiform clouds constitute ∼40% of global cloud cover and play a key role in determining the planetary radiation budget. Electrification remains one of the least understood effects on their microphysical processes. Droplet charging at the top and bottom edges of stratiform clouds arises from vertical current flow through clouds driven by the Global atmospheric Electric Circuit. In-cloud charg...

The Role of Disk-Halo Interaction in Galaxy Evolution: Outflow vs Infall?

We present new parsec-scale resolution data from a multiphase study of the ISM in the walls of Galactic supershells. Hi synthesis images and CO survey data reveal a wealth of substructure, including dense-tipped fingers and extended molecular clouds embedded in shell walls. We briefly consider formation scenarios for these features, and suggest that both the interaction of an expanding shell wi...

Metastable Nitric Acid Trihydrate in Ice Clouds.

The composition of high-altitude ice clouds is still a matter of intense discussion. The constituents in question are ice and nitric acid hydrates, but the exact phase composition of clouds and its formation mechanisms are still unknown. In this work, conclusive evidence for a long-predicted phase, alpha-nitric acid trihydrate (alpha-NAT), is presented. This phase was characterized by a combina...
